The self-inflating mat has a highly porous foam core laminated to an impermeable fabric. This foam material absorbs air into itself after opening the valve and rapidly expands, thus acquiring its typical shape.

When folding the self-inflating mat, the valve is first released and the air is forced out by pressure. Thanks to this, it has much smaller dimensions in the package, compared to ordinary foam mats.
